DeltaDorpers have been working with HolmesGlen TAFE since December 09 to produce lamb for the national ‘Tasting Australia’ competition, that was held in Adelaide on Saturday May 1 2010.

The Australian lamb and sheep flock is at its lowest level since 1905, according to the latest figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The ABS 2008-2009 Agricultural Commodities report states that the flock fell to 72.2 million head as at 30 June 2009, down 4.2 million on the previous year, and the smallest fall since 2005.

We are excited and very pleased with the arrival of our first lambs by our two new stud sires Rocket and Overlander. They have been born easily and are growing fast and we will look forward to later in the year when we can collect ultrasound data on them.

Again Delta Dorpers attended the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo to Promote the positive attributes of the Dorper Breed. It was wonderful to catch up with old clients as well as engage with people new to the industry who have a genuine thrust for knowledge.

The Australian lamb export industry performed remarkably well in 2009, given the economic and currency turmoil. Under pinning the strong demand during 2009 was declining global sheep supplies, reduced NZ competition and strong consumer demand in some key export markets, along with an increase in Australian lamb production.

Delta Dorpers has been approached to work with HolmesGlen TAFE to produce lambs for the national ‘Tasting Australia’ competition, to be held in Adelaide on Saturday 1st May 2010.

We are often surprised on what the dorpers achieve from a production standpoint. Recent slaughter data revealed to us that June drop wether lambs weighed 49kg av. full weight and came back with an average carcase weight of 25.5kg and 12mm fat.

Another opportunity to add to our strong sire battery arose at the Kaya White Dorper sale in WA when we were able to purchase in partnership with Haseley White Dorper  Stud, also from WA, the Top Priced ram as  lot 129 for $6,200-00

Another top stud sire at $3,400-00 for Delta White Dorper Stud Chintin Victoria.

The ram was purchased as the top selection from 97 rams presented and top priced ram from the Annalara White Dorper Stud at Dubbo NSW.

August was a disappointing month when we experienced a severe dog attack on some of our sheep when we had six stud ewes killed one Sunday and another ewe had to be destroyed on the Monday.

Ian travelled up to Cowra in NSW during July for four days to attend an Auctions Plus stock assessor course.

To continue to promote the attributes of the Dorper sheep, and to show how they would fit into a prime lamb production system.

The continued growth of our network of  “co operator flocks” is continuing to develop and expand which is allowing us to have more sheep available for sale.

Delta White Dorper Stud again attended the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo to support and promote the advantages of the Dorper breed to the general public and prospective clients.

We are pleased to announce that our display and presentation of White Dorper stud ewes was extremely well received by the public. As always, with our attitude of being commercially focused, we just loaded a few young stud ewes out of the paddock, onto the trailer and on to the display.
